Hojicha powder is a gently roasted Japanese green tea that is now becoming increasingly popular in Scandinavian tea culture. It has a soft and warming taste with roasted notes, a hint of cocoa and a natural sweetness.
The taste is distinctly different from matcha, which is fresher and greener in character. For many who try hojicha for the first time, it feels both homely and interesting at the same time.
Traditional hojicha
Hojicha is usually drunk as whole roasted tea leaves. The leaves are roasted over high heat until they take on a deep chocolate brown color and a round, smooth flavor. The roasting removes most of the bitterness and naturally lowers the caffeine content, making classic hojicha a popular evening tea in many Japanese homes.
When brewed in the traditional way, hojicha takes on a warm brown color and a mild, roasted aroma with a soothing and soft accordion.
Use a round -bottomed bowl and a regular whisk, preferably as small as possible. Take a teaspoon to measure the tea and a strainer to aim the tea powder so that any lumps disappear. Pour about 0.6 deciliters of water which is about 80 degrees hot. Whisk vigorously until the drink foams. Now the drink is ready to be enjoyed! More detailed instructions are further down the page.
