The most elegant, exclusive tea with a fresh algal aroma and round sweetness.

Gyokuro is the most elegant, exclusive and sophisticated type of tea in our opinion. It should hardly be seen as an everyday tea, but something you drink to treat yourself. It is in the middle of April that the first harvests usually come and it is a big highlight in Japan and among tea fans worldwide. Gyokuro is made from strongly shaded green tea. In the same way you grow Tencha (to make Matcha), shading stops the leaves from converting Theanine to Catechins and increases the amount of Chlorophyll. The resulting high Theanine content of the tea means you get overwhelmingly full flavors of umami in your cup.

This Gyokuro has been shaded for three weeks up to 90% and hand picked (many Japanese teas are machine picked). The flavor produced from this tea is something to prepare for if you haven't tried quality Gyokuro before. Get ready for an intense umami (rich and savory) flavor and super-thick buttery notes. For some people the umami is too strong, but we argue that this particular Gyokuro balances the umami with herbal top notes.

For this tea, we suggest you try the traditional Chinese Gong Fu style of brewing your tea. The idea behind this technique is to use larger proportions of tea leaves to water and very short brewing times. By using more tea leaves and having very short brewing, you only succeed in extracting parts of the entire flavor spectrum. The tea can then be enjoyed in so-called "sections", which gives a much more nuanced experience. Because the flavor develops gradually and there are many more leaves, this contributes to a significantly more intense flavor than in Western-style brewing.
