An exceptional First Flush from Darjeeling, India. With an elegant taste, a silky feel on the palette and full of notes of florality and umami. Without a doubt the teas champagne.
Looking towards Kachenjunga, the world's third highest mountain range, and its magnificent snow-capped peaks, Puttabong Tea Estate is located at 450-2000 meters above sea level. The plantation stretches over 22 kilometers and is bordered by the Rangeet river whose water trickles down from the melted snow of the mountain peaks. This is one of Darjeeling's largest tea plantations, consisting of five divisions that reach all the way from Darjeeling city to the border with Sikkim State.
Puttabong, which translates to "house of the green leaves", stands out in several ways. It is one of Darjeeling's oldest Tea Estates, established by the British pioneer of tea cultivation, Dr. Campbell, in 1852. The plantation's sought-after teas have also set several price records over the years, including an unparalleled SEK 1,276/kg for its "Antique Tea" in 1992.
The plantation grows Darjeeling Clonal, Chinary Bush and Clonal Tea, specially developed to meet the climate and agricultural conditions of the region. The tea produced here is an orthodox black tea, green in tone. The winds caressing the mighty Kachenjunga peaks, the unique soil and altitude, combined with the high level of care and quality of the plantation owners give rise to the finest Darjeeling tea appreciated by discerning connoisseurs around the world.
Darjeeling First Flush is also called wart, as teas from this period are pale yellow in the glass with a distinct taste and floral aromas. This particular batch (EX-14/22) is no exception, as its tea is smooth in the glass and full on the tongue. The drink has a fuller, more stimulating quality and a balanced roughness.
The tea is smooth and round with fruity top notes. The dry leaves are long and stylish with fine, silky and silvery buds, while the brew produces a bright and ripe cup with a sweet taste reminiscent of a breathtaking mountain view.
Puttabong Tea Estate is both Fair Trade and EU Organic certified, which means they have met strict conditions for how their teas are produced, processed, transported and meet fair and safe working conditions for employees. This means high-quality, ethically produced products.
For this tea, we suggest you try the Western brewing style. The idea behind this technique is to use fewer leaves and much more water, while the brewing time is longer to extract as much of the flavor as possible at once.
